Introduction to My Life
I was born into a Catholic home in the Republic of Panama. My parents were members of the Catholic Church and I was baptized as a baby in the main cathedral in Panama City. Some five years later my grandmother who had been a staunch Catholic was converted and became a Protestant. My mother and father soon followed. I was raised in the Protestant church in Panama City run by missionaries of the Foursquare Gospel from the United States. All the services were in Spanish. After my family moved into the Panama Canal Zone when I was in the first grade, we began attending some English-speaking services in the Protestant church in Gatun. Sometime between the beginning of first grade and my going into sixth grade I became a follower of Christ. For the next 10 years I followed Him in the teachings of the church.
But somewhere during my college years I began to drift from those teachings I had been following in my youth. I had a very successful career starting with the military and then going into the aerospace industry, but something was definitely missing in my life. I finally realized that, but by that time over 20 years had gone by. I forgot to follow the teachings that I knew so well but fortunately for me God never forgot me. The success in my professional life however did not carry over to my personal life which was really messed up.
In spite of my unfaithfulness God never forgot me. In 1979 I decided that it was time to turn my life around. Since that time, I have been truly blessed by God who had watched over me all my life. Now, in the twilight years, He has given me more than I could have ever asked for. My family is right at my front door practically. Just down the hill from us and a mile away from our home lives our daughter and her family. Her husband is a retired Navy Chief with a Master's Degree and an excellent job. She has two wonderful sons, my grandsons, who in this photo with me are Shilo on the left, and Dakota on the right. Our daughter is an elementary school teacher with her Master's Degree from Cal Lutheran. She is working with kindergartners and first graders and loves it. She has been doing this for eleven years. This photo is a few years old now, but is still one of my favorite. I have learned so much from having these two little men around me all the time. They aren't little any more!! They spend at least one day a week at our home, doing all our mundane chores around the house, and then eating to their heart's content, their grandmother's great food which they love. I am blessed to have them with us. Thank you Lord!

Prior to December 31, 1999 the flag flying from this mast was the flag of the United States. The U.S. turned over to Panama the entire Canal and all its faclities and towns to Panama at that time.
My youth was spent in the Republic of Panama and my family history in that area goes back as far as 1523 when the Spaniards settled Panama City. My maternal grandfather, Edward Galliher, was Chief of the Building Division for the Panama Canal in its early days. He was responsible for the building of all commercial and residential property, but not the canal lock system itself. This building, for example, the administration building for the Panama Canal was built under my grandfathers supervision. So much of my personal history goes back to this part of the world, including my being fluent in Spanish as well as English. My father was a Tugboat Captain initially and then became a Pilot on the Panama Canal. Both my grandfather and my father are buried in the Corozal Cemetery located adjacent to the Miraflores Locks on the Canal.

The Panama Canal and the Republic of Panama were major part of my life until I left at age 14 to attend school in United States. My father died the summer that I was home from school after my junior year, I was 16 at the time, and from that time on our family began its transition from living in Panama to living in the United States. I returned many times to visit friends and family in Panama but never again to live there until 1980 when I returned for one year and lived in Balboa.
As I sit down to write this introduction, I am now 79 years old. My trip through life is nearing its end. But the trip has been fantastic. I have been given so many wonderful opportunities to do things that most people just dream about that it even amazes me. God has really blessed me throughout this trip. At times I totally ignored Him, but when I thought everything was luck or by accident, it wasn't. It was the Lord looking out after me and guiding and leading even when I didn't know it. Two pages hence on this website, I will try to explain how I earned a living as a Physicist who chose Systems Engineering as his technical direction. A Systems Engineer must be very knowledgeable in all the technical aspects of the various systems that he is working on, but his job is not to develop the individual components, but to take all of these various elements and bring them together in an operating system. That's what I did, and I will explain it on that page.
I mentioned in the paragraph above that I have been blessed by God during my professional career. But over and above the fact that God gave me the ability to apply knowledge gained in school and work experience, he also gave me one other thing that I have a hard time being quiet about, and that is that I am a Christian and believe that God created man in His image to serve Him.
Most religions have a God of their own. I belong to a religion which also has a God of its own. This is the God of the creation of all the physical things which I studied and which I have applied in my job experiences. Along with the creation of the physical side of life, God also created man of which we are in his image. Unfortunately, sin entered the world at the very onset and since that time man has lived in a sinful condition and has had to ask God for forgiveness of sin.
It is God who grants us the forgiveness of our sins. This happens after we follow God’s leading and the words in His Scripture which say “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, shall have everlasting life”. What that means outside of the natural elements of the world is that in the supernatural world God has made away for us to enter eternity and live with him in heaven. Long ago I accepted that way of life and I am thankful for that opportunity.
In 1999 my wife and I decided to take a cruise from Los Angeles through the Panama Canal and then on to Florida. The real purpose for the trip was to make one last trip through the Canal before it was officially turned over to Panama in December of 1999. It was to be my farewell to my birthplace and where I spent my early life living on the Panama Canal Zone which was no longer to be. What we found was that this trip was just the beginning of a new era in our lives.
During the first part of the cruise, I found that no one had been brought on board the ship to give a lecture on the Canal, and so I went to the Cruise Director and volunteered to do just that. He accepted, and this began my next eight years as a full fledged lecturer on four different cruise lines. Our travel agent found out about my experience and communicated with Seven Seas Cruise Lines and convinced them to try me out on their ships as a lecturer. It worked! And we were then brought into their family, a relationship that lasted with them for five years. We were kept occupied as much as we wanted to be, which was at a clip of about half time on their ships for these five years. We then expanded to three other cruise lines and that kept us pretty busy.
My resume, until the year 2009, was very complete and very descriptive of those things that might have some interest to the readers of my web site and to the many thousands of passengers I was to meet on ships of four cruise lines for whom I worked for almost eight years before stopping because of health problems.
I had to stop working on the cruise ships because of physical problems that were unbeknownst to me. I had developed a huge abscess in my abdomen which was growing and leaking toxic material into my body. I was getting very sick and did not know why. Our next door neighbor is one of our leading surgeons in town; he opened me up and found a huge abscess growing in my abdomen. Major surgery and a post recuperative period followed to clean up the mess in my body.
When I retired from the cruise line work, I eliminated all the material on my web site and thought it would never be necessary for me to again write such a thing in the future. But I have been asked so many times about my background since that time, and people have been persistant in their queries for some kind of written resume, that I thought it wise to just put the makings of my web site back on, so that when they asked for bio data, I could just refer them to this web address. What you will find on the rest of this web site is a small part of what my original web site had on it.
During the interim, I have been laid aside several times with other medical problems requiring recovery times, and also requiring time away from my computer and my typing, and as a result I have not done very well at rebuilding this site. But I will get it done!
This redone web site, as it stands, has been done for two reasons. One is to comply with the many requests that I let people know something about the lecturer they had heard on their cruise. But the second reason, and one which drives me most to finish, is to have something in writing that my two grandsons, whom I love very, very much, can look at in years to come, long after I am with the Lord, to enjoy with their own children with some pride, maybe, at the background of their Granddad and by then, Great Granddad. I also want them to know how important God has been in my life from the very beginning all through my exciting years in my work world. I am writing a separate book for them that they can keep and show to their children long after I am gone to be with my God! When I get done with that, then I will eliminate this web site permanently.
So please be patient, and I will soon have most of the material back on the site. I have had a very exciting career path through the military, aerospace and medical world, and I think you will enjoy reading through this.
Finally I would like to say this; my life has not been an accident. All through my life, God has led me and taken care of me even though at times I didn't pay any attention to Him. As I reach the end of my days, I am reminded that this world is also reaching the end of its days. We are rapidly approaching that time when time will be no more. God predicted that this would happen, and we are there. I know where I am going to be spending eternity - in Heaven with the Lord!
The Jews now have their home reestablished in Israel, and that is perhaps the most significant sign of the times. All of the signs predicted in the Bible for Christ to return in the Rapture for His church are now complete! When that happens, the earth will enter the time called the Tribulation, a period of seven years of pure hell! After this is the end!
And in conclusion, for my life I would say this, as it says in the Scriptures, in the Book of Romans; "For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes - the Jew first, and also the Gentile." This Good News tells us how God makes us right in His sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, "It is through faith that a righteous person has life." I am ready for eternity where I will be with God forever and forever.
